The Disappearance of The Cent Sign

Remember when you first learned about money? You learned about dollars and cents and that 100 cents equaled a dollar. You learned that you put $ in front of a number to mean dollars and ¢ after a number to indicate cents. After a while, everyone got the hang of not adding the cent sign at the end when you already had a dollar sign at the beginning.

My question for you is this: When was the last time you saw a cent sign (before this post, obviously)? I really can't remember. In fact, I had to go searching in Word for how to make one (it's Ctrl+/, c by the way).

If I haven't seen it then I need to figure out where it went and why?

My first theory had to do with the modern keyboard and that there is no easy way to type one, but that suggests it was already disappearing before that. I'm now working on a theory that it's all part of a vast conspiracy to make all prices in multiples of a dollar.

So, do you have any ideas?

Star Jones ate it.

(I always wondered how to make the cent sign on the keyboard, but was too lazy to figure it out! Thanks for doing my work for me!)

My parents had an old manual typewriter, useless to most, but a fun game for me and my siblings who would try to get all of the keys stuck at the same time. (All of them, mind you, mostly required one complete forearm and at least two hands, one of which was very difficult to use if already attached to the forearm, but the trick was to see if you could do it by yourself.) It had a cent sign. That was perhaps the last time I saw it.

Except, on occassion, inside the front cover of old paperbacks bought at a used book store. With yellow pages and cracked spines.

I think its demise had something to do with the ANSII standard keyboards developed by IBM back in the 70s. They only had 128 spaces in the 7-bit array, and a lot of them were wasted with control codes (most of which are no longer used), and obscure characters more often used in math and programming.
