Trivial Tuesday

Sadly, the world has lost legendary animator Joseph Barbera, of Hanna-Barbera fame. His first collaboration with William Hanna was on a short called "Puss Gets the Boot." This was actually the first Tom and Jerry cartoon; however, those were not their original names. What less famous monikers did the cat and mouse first have?

I don't know what Jerry's name was but I think Tom was named Jasper. I believe this because I named a cat Jasper once and my dad told me. He was a big Tom & Jerry fan. Nothing else on the planet made my dad laugh except for that show.

Then again, I could be wrong. He often is!!

I wanted to say Mortimer Mouse was Jerry's original name but I think that was Disney.

According to Wikipedia, Jasper battles an "unnamed" mouse in that short.

Normally I don't post an answer to your trivia questions if I don't know the answer off the top of my head, but as I was looking this one up, I read a synopsis of the episode and realized I remember that one. I used to watch T&J a lot as a kid and this one in particular rings a bell. I remember, especially, wondering why they looked so different. Little did I know I was watching the very first of their shorts, although I guess I suspected it was from the early years.

I think we may need to give this one to Ms. Q for getting Jasper and forget about the mouse. As I went back to look things up, I found conflicting info on Jerry's original name. As IL, points out Wikipedia calls him "an unnamed mouse", but IMDB lists the original names as Jasper and Jinx, though only Jasper's name was used.

Itchy: Mortimer Mouse makes me think of the comic strip Outland (or was it Bloom County?) where Mortimer was a washed up Disney reject.
